You can create a system image, which contains a copy of Windows and copies of your programs, system settings, and files. The system image is then stored in a separate location from the original programs, settings, and files. You can use this image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever stops working. If you're using Windows Backup to back up your files, you can have a system image created each time your files are backed up. The files can be saved on a USB flash drive, CDs, DVDs, or a hard drive. The system image must be saved on a hard drive. By default, the system image only includes the drives required for Windows to run. If you want to include additional drives in the system image, you can manually create a system image. If you manually create a system image, it…
Action Center is a central place to view alerts and take actions that can help keep Windows running smoothly. Action Center notifies you when items need your attention. Action Center lists important messages about security and maintenance settings that need your attention. Red items in Action Center are labeled Important, and indicate significant issues that should be addressed soon, such as an outdated antivirus program that needs updating. Yellow items are suggested tasks that you should consider addressing, like recommended maintenance tasks. Open Action Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, and then, under System and Security, clicking Review your computer's status. To view details about either the Security or Maintenance section, click the heading or the arrow next to the heading to expand or collapse the section. If you don’t want to see certain types of messages, you can choose to hide them from view. Get…
If you forget your Windows password, you can use a password reset disk to create a new one. We recommend that you create a password reset disk when you create your password, so you don't lose access to your files and information. Note A password reset disk can only be created for local user accounts. If your computer is on a domain, a system administrator can reset your domain password. To complete these steps, you'll need removable media (a USB flash drive or floppy disk). To create a password reset disk Insert your removable media. Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety, and then clicking User Accounts. In the left pane, click Create a password reset disk, and then follow the instructions. Make sure you store the password reset disk in a safe place. If you need help with…

If you’ve used Windows Vista for more than 3.7 minutes, you know what UAC (User Account Control) is.. it’s the obnoxious, nagging popup window that will be your life for the next 3-5 years unless you switch back to XP in frustration, or to a better OS like… OS X, Suse, Ubuntu, or even XP. Update: This should also work on Windows 7. Note: Disabling UAC will lead to a less secure system, so be warned. Windows needs your permission to annoy the crap out of you: There’s a quick way you can enable or disable this annoying window from the command line: Disable UAC C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Enable UAC C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f After you enable or disable UAC, you will have to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
The single biggest irritation in Windows 7 and Vista is the UAC (User Account Control) system, especially for people that do a lot of tweaking. When you are trying to make configuration changes, it seems like every couple of seconds you are hitting another UAC prompt. Sure, it’s more secure… but what options do we have to make it less annoying? There are at least 4 different ways that we can tweak UAC to be less annoying, most of which I’ve written about before. Note: Disabling or modifying UAC is a security risk. If you want to be as secure as possible, you should likely leave things alone. 1) Disable UAC Entirely The first thing that you can always do is completely disable UAC… the only problem with this is that you’ll end up making the system less secure if you are also the type of person that downloads and…
Starting today, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will be available to everyone via the Microsoft Download Center and start rolling out via Windows Update. Most people will simply get Windows 7 SP1 via Windows Update when it becomes available to them (See Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1). Remember - for Windows 7, SP1 will help keep your PCs well supported by delivering ongoing updates, many of which have been made previously available through Windows Update. It does, however, include client-side support for RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory which are two new virtualization features enabled in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. For tips and recommendations with regards to installing SP1, I recommend reading this blog post I published last week.
